The Sustainable Viticulture Phase 1 project explores how vineyard development and management in the Kent Downs can support the environment while respecting the area’s unique landscape character.

Funded through the Farming in Protected Landscapes programme, with support from Defra, the project builds on earlier viticulture research in the Kent Downs and responds to the sector’s continued growth. Phase 1 focuses on gathering evidence, insight, and practical experience from those working directly in viticulture and environmental management.

Purpose of the project

The project aims to:

  • Understand current approaches to sustainable viticulture in the Kent Downs

  • Explore opportunities to enhance biodiversity, soil health, and landscape integration in vineyard settings

  • Identify shared challenges and good practice through collaborative engagement

  • Provide an evidence base to inform future guidance and next steps

Phase 1 is exploratory and does not propose new policy or funding commitments.

Approach

Phase 1 uses a combination of:

  • Engagement meetings with vineyard businesses and environmental specialists

  • Surveys to gather experiences and perspectives from across the sector

  • Desk-based research reviewing existing evidence and guidance

This approach ensures that learning is grounded in practical experience and informed by both environmental and viticultural expertise.

Phase 1 report

The Sustainable Viticulture Phase 1 report brings together key themes, learning, and opportunities identified through the project. It draws on engagement with vineyard businesses and environmental specialists, survey responses, and a review of existing evidence and guidance.
