Folkestone is a geology library. There’s a persistent atmosphere reflecting the genesis of our world. It is like a backwards time journey, where everything around calls attention to the fact that one is stepping over a land that once was sea.

Guided by lithic experiences and trades, stained by the white erosion and sedimentation of the chalk, the Milky Way Project by Portugal-based artist Marcelo Moscheta aims to reimagine the origins of a beautiful encounter between the elements and humanity revealed along the grasslands and cliffs of the Kent Downs AONB.

The expansive research and experimentation that Marcelo has undergone in developing this project has been beautifully documented, and an exhibition will be open to view throughout the SALT + EARTH festival to showcase it all, at The Urban Room Folkestone.

Marcelo is in Folkestone through Magic Carpets, a Creative Europe platform uniting 14 European cultural organisations. Artists embark on residencies abroad, engaging with local artists and communities to create new work which highlights local particularities.
