The Chalk Path self-guided audio walk through the chalk cliffs of Folkestone and Calais is returning for Summer 2025 as part of Folkestone Fringe.

Embark on a transformative journey across millennia with The Chalk Path, a bilingual, self-guided audio walk that immerses you in the story of Earth’s deep time. Travel through the dramatic landscapes of Folkestone Warren and Cap Blanc Nez, guided by GPS-triggered audio narration that unfolds the history and future of these iconic chalk cliffs, inviting reflection on humanity’s place in the vastness of time. This experience, designed specifically for these locations, makes the landscapes as much a character in the story as you, the listener.

The self-guided walk is free and available to access at any time during daylight hours.

Links to download the audio will be available again here in September 2025. Maps will be available from Folkestone Bookshop and East Cliff National Coastwatch Institution station throughout September and October 2025.

Before setting off, download the walk to ensure uninterrupted listening—Wi-Fi is limited along the route.

Start your journey here:

In England:

  • Location: The Coastwatch building on Folkestone’s East Cliff (near the white Martello tower). Begin by taking the steps behind the Horn sculpture or from the East Cliff sports hut.

In France:

  • Location: The top viewpoint on Cap Blanc Nez, accessible from the D940 between Sangatte and Escalles. From the upper car park, follow the coastal path, bearing right after the Sangatte signposted turn; the first fenced viewpoint marks the walk’s starting point.

What you’ll need:

  • A smartphone, headphones, and the Echoes app (download before you go)
  • A specially illustrated paper map to guide you, available to collect at Folkestone NCI station or The Folkestone Bookshop

Discover a new perspective on time, history, and our connection to the ancient landscapes that surround us.
