Traditional orchards are a key part of the natural beauty of the Kent Downs.

Amongst the dramatic chalk downland, where ancient villages nestle in hidden dry valleys and farmland is surrounded by a network of hedgerows and wooded hilltops, traditional orchards, a vital part of our heritage, stand majestic.

Meander through the villages of Plaxtol, Hucking, Lenham, Newnham and Stockbury and discover traditional orchards thriving as community orchards, once again the hub of the village.  Under the Kent Orchards for Everyone project, the management of these community orchards has been undertaken by the villagers who have been trained in horticultural skills to give these trees a new lease of life.  Through the regeneration and a holistic approach to these traditional orchards, the villagers have been able to celebrate their heritage, to volunteer and collaborate in surveys with schools participating in educational events in their very own community orchard.
