The Chalk Path/Le Chemin de Craie is a bilingual self-guided audio walk through Folkestone Warren and Cap Blanc Nez that invites you to walk down through deep time, to reflect on the past and reimagine the future, considering the enormity of time and it's relationship to our own human existence and impact.

  • Folkestone

The walk uses GPS to reveal the story along the route – it can only be heard in the locations it has been created with, and the landscape is a character in the work, as much as the audience is. Your journey will be supported by a specially illustrated paper map, which you can find at the start points of the walk at Folkestone NCI station; Folkestone Urban Room; Maison de Site de Deux Caps, or Escalles Cabinalivre.

You’ll need a pair of headphones and a smartphone, and to download the walk before you set off from the Echoes app or website – this link will be available via the website – bit.ly/chalkpath. Wifi is limited in the walk locations so it’s important to download it in advance. You can also borrow an MP3 player and headphones from us to experience a lower-fi version of the walk, available to collect at Urban Room Folkestone (urbanroomfolkestone.net)

THE WALK STARTS HERE:

*ENGLAND –The Coastwatch building on Folkestone’s East Cliff (by the white Martello tower) – take the steps up onto the hill behind from the Horn sculpture or from the East Cliff sports hut.

*FRANCE – The top viewpoint on Cap Blanc Nez, accessed from the D940 road between Sangatte and Escalles: Follow the path from the upper carpark towards the coast and keep right after the signposted turning for Sangatte. The first fenced viewpoint is the beginning of the audio walk
