Digging deep to find evidence of prehistoric life in Kent
Discover Kent’s prehistoric past by joining a hands-on archaeological dig with the Kent Archaeological Society (KAS). This exciting community excavation will investigate what may be a Neolithic long barrow, an early burial monument dating back over 4,000 years.

Join the Kent Archaeological Society for a special one-day community excavation at historic Lees Court Estate near Faversham as we delve into our prehistoric past.
Our work on this 800-year-old estate, under the stewardship of The Countess Sondes, has been ongoing for several years. Recently, with a dedicated team of volunteers and students, we have concentrated on uncovering prehistoric burial monuments at three adjacent sites.
Our experts have identified these sites as the remnants of burial monuments or ceremonial centres that date back to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, around 3,000 to 1,500 BC. The team has successfully unearthed artefacts from this era, including:
- Flint tools
- Rare fragments of decorated pottery that predate the Romans in Kent by 3,000 years
- Evidence of prehistoric human cremations
Inspired by these discoveries, our members are now set to explore two new sites this year, eager to uncover more significant findings and try out experimental archaeology. We are excited to share our discoveries as they unfold.
