At the edge of the Kent Downs, a small allotment is making a big difference. Run by Touchbase Care, a vibrant and inclusive community group, the once empty space has been transformed into a lively hub where people of all abilities come together to grow, create and connect with nature.
Nature, on everyone’s terms
In 2023–2024, support from the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) programme Touchbase realised a long-held dream: to create a fully accessible and engaging allotment space where people with physical and learning disabilities, neurodivergent conditions such as autism and ADHD, and sensory impairments could explore, learn, and thrive in nature.
For many members, particularly those living in urban supported-living environments-the allotment is one of the few places they can walk on grass, hear birdsong, or dig their hands into soil.
Thanks to FiPL funding, Touchbase was able to install raised beds, improve paths, purchase accessible greenhouse, and cover vital transport and fuel costs – making the outdoors a little more reachable for everyone
Skills, sustainability and biodiversity
But this space is about more than growing vegetables.
Here members build birdhouses and bug hotels from reclaimed wood, create ceramic wind chimes for a sensory garden, and help plant wildflowers to support pollinators and biodiversity. A new pond and a commitment to chemical-free growing mean the site is now a haven for wildlife too. Every task supports skill-building – like dexterity, teamwork, and communication, but more importantly, moments of joy and achievement.
A community growing together
The project is also supported by localvolunteers and community partners. Produce grown on site is used in Touchbase’s own kitchen, where members cook and share nourishing, home-grown meals.
But don’t just take our word for it—here’s what some of the members have to say:
“I like walking on the ground. The trees make me feel calm. I work hard on the farm.” – JW, Touchbase member
“There’s cows, and I like doing the planting.” – RC, Touchbase member
This project is a shining example of how Farming in Protected Landscapes can open up the countryside to everyone.
This project was made possible through funding from the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) programme, delivered by the Kent Downs National Landscape on behalf of Defra. With their support, Touchbase Care is helping more people experience the freedom, joy and connection that nature brings—right at the heart of the Kent Downs.
