Green Pilgrimage Project

Working with six partners from Kent, Norfolk, Sweden, Norway, Romania and Italy, Kent Downs will build on the success of Pilgrimage Tourism across Europe.

Green Pilgrimage will identify how the economic benefits of Pilgrimage tourism can protect natural and cultural heritage through investment, partnership working and policy prioritisation.

Ancient pilgrim routes such as The Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, report an annual 10% increase in numbers, particularly among non-religious growing from 90,000 visitors in 2005 to over 260,000 in 2015.  Can partners learn from this success and how can we ensure that growth protects heritage assets and benefits local businesses?

In Kent work will focus on the North Downs Way, Pilgrims Way and the Via Francigena.  This Interreg funded project has just under €2 million over 5 years to explore this ancient tradition for the benefit of a modern audience.
