Combining Art, Artefacts and Archive, and encouraging exploration and imagination, this exhibition of work from GeoAmbassador Bryan Hawkins, introduces visitors to the stories of two fascinating ships (The Endurance and The LV21) as it celebrates and re-imagines elements of the famous story of the Endurance Antarctic Expedition of 1914-18.

Emphasising the small stories of isolation, loneliness, companionship, fear, awe, terror, heroism, failings and triumphs experienced by the Endurance’s crew, this exhibition also reflects the extraordinary endurance of seafarers, seafaring and the spirit of exploration across time.

Endurance suggests important trans-historical connections as we move beyond our world, our planet and its ecologies to explore the emerging and unmapped worlds of outer space and re-encounter the ghosts of expansionism, exploitation, human bravery and frailty and competing empires.

Come onboard to meet the artist, explore the artwork and imagine for yourself…

Location Historic Dockyard Chatham

Ahead of the exhibition aboard LV21, a selection of the artworks by Bryan Hawkins will be on display in the Intra Arts Windows Gallery. 337-341 High Street, Rochester ME1 1DA. The exhibition can be viewed from the street outside the building 24 hours a day so pop by anytime throughout September for a glimpse of the works.

A special separately ticketed live performance of Tom Crean, Antarctic Explorer by Aidan Dooley accompanies the exhibition onboard LV21 on the evening of Saturday 11 October. For further information and tickets go to the Tom Cream event page.

Access

As a historic ship access aboard LV21 is limited with main entry via a narrow gangway and a steep staircase. Please wear flat, non-slip shoes when onboard. The crew can assist with entry on arrival if needed.

Regrettably there is no wheelchair access to the ship.
