North Downs Way 14 : Wye to Folkestone

Start your ramble in the picturesque village of Wye, surrounded by farmland and the Kent Downs. You will soon climb the chalk hill that leads to a panoramic viewpoint and Wye Crown Memorial. This hillside carving was accomplished in 1902 to celebrate the coronation of Edward VII. 

As you continue on your walk you will soon reach the Devil’s Kneading Trough which is situated in Wye National Nature Reserve. This stunning valley was formed during the last ice age and has over 20 orchid species that are protected on this calcareous grassland habitat. 

Take in the view at Farthing Common Viewpoint where on a clear can you can see as far as Fairlight in East Sussex. Take care to cross the now busy Stone Street which was originally built by the Romans to connect the City of Canterbury and a Saxon fort near Hythe. 

The epic walk finishes high above Folkestone with views of this coastal town. Reflect on the distance you have travelled and the land you have crossed to reach this point. Celebrate by walking the additional short distance to the Folkestone Harbour Arm for fish and chips!
