Whinless Down Local Nature Reserve an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty located just a short distance from the centre of Dover. Access to the bottom of the hillside can be gained from Elms Vale Recreation Ground, where there is a free car park and an information panel. The top of the cliff slopes can be accessed from Noah’s Ark Road, where a blustery walk along the hilltop provides outstanding views across Dover towards Dover Castle. The whole area is awash with colour as the ancient chalk landscape and grassland is covered in rare wildflowers during late Summer and early Autumn, which in turn attract large numbers of beautiful butterflies and other insects. An Orienteering and Tree Trail is set up over Whinless Down. A free leaflet is available showing the walking and orienteering routes with information about wildlife and history is available from the publications page.

Easy access information

This park and open space contains uneven trails, un-surfaced or narrow pathways. Also, there are width restricting features, such as stiles and narrow gaps making it difficult for visitors with pushchairs and/or wheelchairs to access some parts of the site.
