The Western Heights is managed by the West Cliffs Countryside Project. The fortification is carved into the hillside, it is a scheduled ancient monument, and the chalk slopes that surround it are a protected local nature reserve. Routes to the area are clearly marked from key locations in Dover and there is free parking at several locations, including at North Military Road (shown on the map). Three circular nature trails enable visitors to explore the whole area. The Grand Shaft walk takes walkers along the base of the deep sunken ditches where the scale of the construction can be clearly seen.

Interpretation panels provide interesting historical information and details about wildlife and local habitats. There are stunning views in all directions across the town, towards Dover Castle, and out to sea. The fascinating historical features, the variety of flora and wildlife, the fresh air and bracing walks make The Western Heights a great day out.

Easy access information

This park and open space contains uneven trails, un-surfaced or narrow pathways. Also, there are width restricting features, such as stiles and narrow gaps making it difficult for visitors with pushchairs and/or wheelchairs to access some parts of the site.
