This workshop with Ruth Siddall will introduce the formation and properties of earth and mineral pigments and participants will learn how to transform these natural materials into paints.

  • Free event, limited capacity (maximum 20), suitable for five years old and over,  must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and bring a face mask as we will be working with fine powders.

Coloured minerals and rocks have been used throughout human history to create paints. This workshop will introduce ochres, chalks and green earths and other minerals and demonstrate how these materials can be processed, prepared and transformed into paints. Participants will be taken through the steps of this process and have the opportunity to make a small set of watercolour paints from geological materials and experiment in using these for painting.
