The Putting Down Routes team and Black Girls Hike are delighted to offer a scenic walk in Kent.
Highlights of the walk include wonderful views of the 17th century Chilham Castle and its grounds and a view of Godmersham Park, where Jane Austen was a regular visitor. We will stand in front of the Coppice Oratory, that gives us the first glimpse of Canterbury Cathedral, as shared by the thousands of pilgrims journeying to the city. We are hoping that the bluebells in Kings Wood will be at their magnificent best.
The walk will start and finish at Chilham Castle, Kent, a ten minute walk from Chilham Railway Station, and on a direct line from London and Ashford. It will be between 6.5 and 7 miles in length. We will set off at 10.30am and the walk will last about four hours with a pause for lunch at the Coppice Oratory on the North Downs Way. It is partly linear and partly circular. There is a steep hill and stiles to climb, so it is not suitable for those using wheeled mobility aids or with buggies. It is suitable for anyone who is confident that they can walk this distance and climb a slope of 250 feet. The terrain is easy, some walking on a minor road, but a few places where it may be muddy.
Friendly dogs are welcome on leads but will need to be lifted over stiles.
There is ample free parking in the centre of Chilham village with a car park with toilets 200 yards from the village centre.
This event is part of the North Downs Way National Trail and Kent Downs National Landscape’s Putting Down Routes Project. Working with partners Wild With Wheels and Black Girls Hike. This is funded through The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Defra’s Farming in Protected Landscapes.
