This activity relates classification to a local environment to make this curriculum subject more immediately relevant for the children. The Kent Downs is a diverse landscape that supports a broad range of living things and habitats. The ‘Living Things and Habitats’ worksheet on the right under Downloads allow the children to classify living things from the Kent Downs into mammals, plants, birds, invertebrates or amphibians. The children can then go on to link these species to the habitats they can see in the Kent Downs.

A more detailed description of living things and habitats in the Kent Downs can be found in the Teacher’s Guide below.

During the walk you can discuss the habitats and living things you might find there. You can complete the worksheets either on the walk or back in the classroom.
