Beginning in November of 2022, Writer Francine Hajilou led Entangled roots: a series of reading/walking circles in + around Folkestone for womxn of the global majority* to celebrate and reclaim their collective ancestral histories; while also reimagining their present and future relationship to the land and the natural world through walking together and sharing conversations.

It formed part of a wider programme that was entitled ‘Seeding The Commons’, produced by Custom Food Labs, and resulted in a zine that explored poetry, essays and conversations informed and inspired by these walks and its themes.

Building on this project, Francine will lead a walk for womxn of the global majority, holding space for deep listening, and free writing. The route will start at Urban Room Folkestone and continue to East Cliff, The Warren and end at The Locavore Community Garden.

*global majority: people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, or indigenous to the global south.

Accessibility Information

Due to steps (approx 30) leading from Sunny Sands to East Cliff, a narrow gateway and use of trails parts of the walk are not accessible to wheelchair users and parts might be challenging for people with mobility and access needs. However, the deep listening and free writing activities will take place at Locavore Community Garden which is designed to be an accessible space and has disabled parking on site. The free writing will take place at a high table. Depending on current ticket availability there is the possibility to take part in the Deep Listening and Writing activities only. Please email me at francineearle@hotmail.co.uk if you would like to discuss your access requirements in more detail regarding the walk and the activities.
