At the North Kent Woods and Downs NNR, we know that nature offers much more than beautiful landscapes—it’s vital for our health and wellbeing. Our aim is to create spaces that invite people to reconnect with nature, stay active, and take care of their mental and physical health.
Across both Shorne and Lullingstone, we host regular volunteer teams, where you can get involved in maintaining and preserving the reserve. Whether you’re interested in practical conservation tasks or learning about archaeology, there’s an opportunity for everyone. The Shorne Woods Archaeology Group (SWAG) meets regularly and has worked on exciting projects such as the Randall Manor Revealed excavation, which you can explore through the YouTube video and the Shorne Woods Archaeology Group website.

Shorne and Lullingstone also offer weekly Park Runs, creating a welcoming space for runners of all levels. For beginners, there are waymarked running routes (1,2,3 routes) to guide newcomers and ensure a positive introduction to running.
For those interested in fitness, both sites feature trim trails with outdoor fitness equipment, offering visitors a chance to exercise while immersed in nature. Whether walking, jogging, or running, the well-maintained waymarked trails cater to all abilities, taking you through the diverse landscapes of the reserve. These circular routes are accessible and easy to follow, making Shorne and Lullingstone ideal locations to explore.

Throughout the year, the reserve hosts events such as the summer HAF (Holiday Activities and Food) programme for children eligible for free school meals, providing a safe and engaging environment for families. The sites are also used by various community groups, from walking clubs to schools, scouts, and cubs. Accessible trails are available for those who may need extra support. Accessibility reports for Shorne and Trosley are available on the website to help visitors plan their trips.
The trails at Shorne and Lullingstone, including the Luddesdown Trek, Darnley Trail, Coldrum Trail, Harvel Hike, and Trosley Ramble, are well published and provide a range of experiences for everyone to enjoy.
These activities are part of the commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of local communities while ensuring the protection of the natural environment within the North Kent Woods and Downs NNR.
