One year ago, the North Kent Woods and Downs became a National Nature Reserve, a nationally important landscape where ancient woodlands, chalk grasslands, rare wildlife, and local communities come together.
Since then, the reserve has welcomed visitors, supported conservation work, inspired learning, and created more opportunities for people to connect with nature on their doorstep.
Now, one year on, we’re celebrating everything achieved so far, and looking ahead to what comes next.
What is the North Kent Woods and Downs NNR?
The North Kent Woods and Downs NNR is part of the King’s Series of National Nature Reserves, a group of nationally important places recognised for their outstanding wildlife and natural beauty.
Created through a shared commitment to protecting nature, the reserve brings together landowners, conservation organisations and local communities to care for this special landscape.
Stretching from Gravesham to the Medway Valley, the reserve includes ancient woodlands, chalk grasslands and historic parklands. It is home to rare wildflowers, ancient trees and important habitats for wildlife.
It is also a place for people to enjoy, with opportunities for walking, exploring, learning and spending time outdoors in a landscape full of history and life.
Join the Celebration
We’re marking the first anniversary with a programme of events, activities and stories celebrating the people and places that make the reserve so special.
