The North Kent Woods and Downs National Nature Reserve (NNR) is safeguarded by a range of legal protections, ensuring its preservation for future generations. These protections are vital to maintain the reserve’s exceptional habitats, rare species, and rich cultural heritage. Below are the key designations and frameworks that provide this crucial protection:
National Nature Reserve (NNR)
NNR status is a statutory declaration, but does not provide legal protection in the way that a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) does. However, NNR designation places the reserve under a rigorous management framework, with core members committing to sustainable conservation and preserving its unique habitats in perpetuity.
Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
The reserve boasts three Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), areas of significant wildlife or geological value. These designations will continue to ensure critical habitats and species are protected and carefully managed to maintain the ecological integrity of the landscape, preserving the reserve’s diverse ecosystems and wildlife.
Kent Downs National Landscape
Kent Downs National Landscape (formerly AONB) role is to protect and enhance the natural beauty and character of the landscape. The KD NL has played a key role in the designation of the NNR, which will become its flagship Nature Reserve. They are committed to the partnership, and its management framework which sets out its aims and ambitions and aids partners by laying out shared future objectives.
Ancient Woodland
The North Kent Woods and Downs is home to ancient woodlands, some over 400 years old. These irreplaceable woodlands are legally protected, preventing any loss or degradation. The trees form the backbone of the reserve’s biodiversity, providing vital habitats for associated species and contributing to the area’s rich natural history.
Special Areas of Conservation (SACs)
SACs are protected sites that preserve habitats and species of national importance. Their purpose is to maintain or restore natural habitats and species populations and protect species that are important to biodiversity.
Protected Species Legislation
Many rare and endangered species call the North Kent Woods and Downs home. Several pieces of UK legislation grant these species special protection to prevent their decline. This legal framework ensures that their habitats remain undisturbed, allowing these vital species to thrive and continue to play a key role in the reserve’s ecosystems.
Through these protective measures, we are working to secure a thriving future for the North Kent Woods and Downs, fostering biodiversity and preserving the landscape’s natural and cultural wealth for generations to come.
