Outdoor Activities in the Kent Downs

We're working on creating some new outdoor experiences so you can enjoy an exciting and safe sense of adventure, for now why not get that adrenaline going, escape the crowds and discover some of Kent's hidden gems.

When guidelines allow we'll also be recommending some local guides who can literally point you in the right direction, help with your pacing or even reveal some of Kent's secret history and heritage. So get ready to grab your coat, running shoes or lifejacket, step outside and get ready to experience the wind on your face as you run down woodland hills, cycle across clifftops or paddle towards the sea.

We're Warming up for Action

We're on the starting blocks and are working with several businesses and organisations to develop experiences that are guaranteed to get your blood pumping. Here's a sneak peak of what we're hoping to run with soon...

My Jones Life

Working as a Travel and Life Blogger, Tamsin from My Jones Life, not only has a love of Kent but has already sampled many of the best places to visit. This makes her perfectly positioned to launch new bespoke travel packages and experiences for solo travellers, families and small groups that will be full of top tips, hidden gems and a genuine passion for supporting local.

Beachborough Park

Beachborough Park is located less than a mile from the North Downs Way with direct access to an extensive network of public footpaths, woodlands and landscapes. Add to that 20 years of experience in the sport and leisure sector, triathlon coaching, leading walks for the Ramblers and you have the perfect mix for wonderful and insightful walking or cycling tours, watch this space!

Kent Outdoor Explorers

Kent Outdoor Explorers is a friendly and welcoming walking group that normally meets weekly for walks ranging in length from 3 to 26 miles all across Kent from Dover to Dartford. Keen to expand their offering they are developing experiences that combine walks with the opportunity to engage more closely with the local area by working with farmers, businesses and producers en-route.

Shorne Woods Country Park

Shorne Woods Country Park already includes an eco-friendly visitor centre and cafe, fishing lakes, trim trail and picnic and play areas set in 292 acres of beautiful woodlands, wetlands and meadows. They are looking to develop experiences to involve their team of rangers, education rangers and archaeological teams who have a wealth of knowledge that they would love to share with families of all shapes and sizes.

Brockhill Country Park

Brockhill Country Park is rich in wildlife and boasts a lake, woods, meadows, picnic and play areas. Well known as a great family day out they want to explore creating a series of adult challenges including survival challenges, campfire cookery and foraging activities all designed to connect you with nature.

Mindful Coaching Today

Make the most of your outdoor exercise by combining a walk or cycle with mindfulness training. Known as ‘Adventure Coaching’ Mindful Coaching Today helps people create the mental space to think about their most important goals and aspirations and produce a plan to achieve it. This transformational coaching experience will help create a positive impact on mental health and overall wellbeing.

There are already plenty of places where you can get outside and enjoy some light or full-on exercise in the Kent Downs AONB and North Downs Way. Here are some routes and tips to try whilst we work on our new experiences...

Perry Woods Cycle Trail

This 10 mile cycle and walking route takes you on an all access journey through some of Kent's quentessential countryside - rolling hills, picturesque villages, historic churches, hop gardens, sun-drenched fields and abundant orchards. Plus there are at least 3 fabulous country pubs on the way, what are you waiting for?

Wye and Crundale Rides

With views a plenty this horse-riding route follows bridleways, byways and sections of quiet minor roads near Ashford. Running close to Wye Nature Reserve with it's 21 species of rare orchids and the infamous Devil's Kneading Trough - a dry, steep-sided valley formed by peri-glacial action near the end of the last ice age - what's not to like?!

Freedown Rides

The journey takes you through beautiful farmland and over hills near the villages of St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe and Kingsdown. Suitable for walks, cycles and horse-rides you'll pass close to Walmer Castle and could literally find yourself following in the hoof steps of the Duke of Wellington himself!

English Cathedral Cycle Route

A new cycle route linking every English cathedral is set to be launched in Bike Week, thanks to a partnership between the Association of English Cathedrals, the British Pilgrimage Trust, Cycling UK and Sustrans. It will link all 42 Church of England cathedrals in a new initiative to promote greener travel and mental and physical wellbeing.

The Big Pedal

19th - 30th April - Join the team at Sustrans and schools across the UK from who are taking part in this 10 day event aimed at encouraging more families to travel to school by bike, foot, scooter or wheels of any kind.
